From Randy Bohlender
I spoke with an adoptive dad today. He?is at the very start of the process – he and his wife have said YES to adoption. They have no paper work filled out, no stack of forms, no doctors appointments or no fingerprint ink on their thumbs.
They are literally at the starting line…but they are miles ahead of a lot of other families. I knew that when he talked about his two buddies who were committed to helping make this happen. They are there to encourage, pray, and even help raise funds. Even as we spoke, I thought “This family is going to do it….they’re going to adopt.”
A team approach increases your likelihood of a successful adoption exponentially. Adoption is one of the most beautiful, heart-wrenching, exciting, scary things you can do. It is not meant to be done alone – or enjoyed alone. As you start the process, be reaching out to others who you can ask to journey with you.
Specifically, ask them:
- Can I call you for encouragement when I’m overwhelmed?
- When I get exciting news, will you be excited for me?
- If I need help raising funds, can I count on you to work alongside me?
Building a team of support is one of the things you can do to move you from a potential adoptive parent to standing there in your own home with your child in your arms.
