Joe and Karen are preparing to bring home their twins on Thanksgiving Day. It’s hard to imagine a more appropriate adoption story to post this Thanksgiving week! In her own words, Karen, shares about their journey:
How did the Lord lead you to pursue adoption?
I have always had a dream of having a large, round kitchen table with children from around the world eating, laughing and loving each other and teaching others that love has no boundaries of race or gender. When Joe and I started dating, I shared my dream with him and he was completely on board and loved my dream embracing it as his own too. We tried briefly to see if we could have biological children, but when that wasn’t a possibility, we didn’t skip a beat, we prayed, we waited and we followed what I had always known was our calling from God. Being a parent wasn’t about giving birth to us, it was about loving children.
Early on we had a failed international adoption and we decided to take a step back and heal. During our healing process I had been searching on the internet other options for when we were ready, I wanted to know what direction to go in. I’m a very type A personality who makes spreadsheets, and decisions based on facts and information. When I came across Christian Adoption Consultants I read, I watched and we prayed. If this was the direction we needed to go in, we prayed that God would open the right doors and close the wrong ones.
In the spring, Joe and I both felt ready to start the adoption journey again. When CAC had a discount, Joe and I both felt that it was time to jump in and see what we needed to do to get started….so we signed with CAC on 4/24/13 and we got a call from our consultant, Karalee Alvey. She and I immediately hit it off and I immediately felt like we had not only a consultant to help us navigate our adoption journey path but a true life long friend. She helped us get home study ready and profile ready and no matter what question, what panic, she was there to help!
What was your journey to your child like?
Our journey has been a “typical” adoption journey (if there is such a thing)….a roller coaster! Once we became home study ready and profile ready we started applying to agencies (7/1/13). We thought we knew what situations we would be open to, but we had no idea what God had in store for us. With each situation, we felt God was trying to open our hearts and our minds. With each situation, we felt that we could say yes, to more things that these beautiful birth mothers were going through because we felt that God was ultimately in control and He knew what we could handle. Our fears no longer became fear. Our journey was relatively short but when we were in the midst of the ride, it felt so long. By the time we were presented with the birth mom of our twins, we felt open and at peace and prayed for her and her babies, hoping we were the right family. On Oct. 1, 2013 we received our match and we couldn’t imagined how life was about to change and how God would open doors to make everything happen in His perfect timing. On the weekend on Oct. 19th we were blessed to be able to meet the twins birth mother. She was sweet and quiet and wanted to ensure that we felt comfortable knowing how uncomfortable she was herself. It was sweet and amazing! We went with her to a 4D ultrasound and what am amazing thing to be able to experience! Little did we know that a week later they would be born! They were born at 33 weeks and had to spend a few weeks in the NICU but they are doing amazing. We are so blessed to be planning on bringing them home on their 1 month birth day, which happens to be Thanksgiving Day. We have so much to be thankful for!
What has God has taught you about Himself through your adoption journey?
God has taught us that if we are faithful and listen to His timing and His direction, all things are possible. He has opened our hearts and our minds to others. Joe reminds us all the time that being open to others is what Jesus would do. We have no place looking down upon or judging others for where they are in their life so when situations came up, and we would pray, we both felt God was opening our hearts to others who are not in the same place in life that we are. Our journey has been relatively short but our lessons that God has taught us will last a lifetime. Our beautiful children will know that they were prayed for, they were loved and they were always apart of His plan.
What did you appreciate about the help of Christian Adoption Consultants?
Everything sounds so silly but it really is the truth. Karalee has helped us and reminded us of what is important. She gave of her time, her knowledge, her prayers and her love to ensure that any question we had, any fear we felt, any concern we had, we were able to work through knowing that she had our best interest in mind at all times. The knowledge that she shared was truly lead by God to show us how if we are open to what His plan is, we will be blessed. And blessed seems like such a small word compared to how we feel.
Clara and Cooper will come home with us on Thanksgiving Day…Oh how we have so much to be Thankful for! God is Good….All the Time!
Thank you, Joe and Karen, for giving Christian Adoption Consultants the opportunity to be a part of your incredible adoption journey!
