Clearing up misconceptions about adoption…

The adoption world is full of misconceptions.Most people have an idea of what it is like but that idea is based on one case they heard about years ago or a Lifetime movie. It’s important to remember that we really can’t get a full picture of adoption from one case – and movies are by nature more dramatic than real life. In reality, adoption is doable.

Misconception #1There are so many families adopting that it’s almost impossible to adopt a newborn.

The first part of this misconception is actually based in truth – there are a lot of families adopting, and that is great!

The second part about it being impossible? Not so true. In a recent week, we had seven clients adopt eight newborns (Yay for twins!). While that’s a busy week even for us, our files are full of families like yours who have adopted newborns.

Misconception #2 It takes an eternity to adopt a baby domestically.

The timing of adoption can vary widely. It can take a long time, but it doesn’t always. In fact, it can happen quickly.

A lot of different factors play into the timing. The more qualifiers you have regarding adoption, such as only considering a child of a specific race, the longer it takes. If your heart and mind is open, it can happen quickly.

Regrettably, couples sometimes make key decisions at the beginning of their adoption story that actually slows the process dramatically. This is why working with a consultant from the start is so important.

Misconception #3 Adoption is too expensive for people like us.

Adoption fees vary from agency to agency.Some can be quite expensive, others are far more reasonable. That said, most of our clients do some creative fundraising that allows others to participate in the miracle of adoption along with them.

Very few of our clients have the full adoption fee laying around in a drawer somewhere, but God is so in favor of adoption that if they put their hearts and minds to it, the finances can be found.
